As a Mindset, Leadership & Women’s Empowerment Coach, I partner with the high-achieving woman (like you) as you navigate a new role as a barrier-breaker (first), explore a career transition, position yourself to run for public office, and create a life filled with wellness and joy.
After working as an Adjunct Professor and serving as a senior leader for two Members of Congress, I ran for public office becoming the first Black woman to represent the fifth ward on the city council in my hometown. Half-way through my term, just two years later, I became the first Black mayor elected in the city of Kankakee, Illinois history. As you know, when you achieve a certain level of leadership, particularly as a “first,” there is a price to pay. I know the costs.
As a leader, I have always stood firmly (fiercely) in my purpose, unapologetic about the vision I have for community, leadership, and creating equitable systems that bring people through a state of survival mode to thriving.
Additionally, I understand all the “isms” you endure from being the “only” in rooms — the anxiety, having your credentials questioned, attempts to silence your voice, and efforts to minimize your contributions.
You are not alone and though I am no longer serving in an elected role, I have dedicated myself to supporting women through the work I do as a trusted ally having been in your shoes. Also, I support women’s organizations such as the Mayors Innovation Project, Represent Women, and NFTE as a thought leader and advisor.
I am still in the game; just playing a different position. And I am team WOMAN.
Remember, “a successful woman is the one who can build a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her.” These bricks often serve as the catalysts to your breakthroughs and transformation.
